When a Parent Stops Listening to the Mustn'ts

Listen to Mustn'ts, child

Listen to the Don'ts.

Listen to the Shouldn'ts, the Impossibles, the Won'ts.

Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me.

Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.

In this poem

Shel Silverstein captures perfectly

my absolute favorite part

of coaching parents

It's when a parent decides to

Unshackle

From their societal programming

The Mustn’ts Don’ts Shouldn’ts Impossibles Won'ts

Who says your kid needs to go to college to be successful?

Who says a mom isn’t allowed free time?

Who says happiness needs to look a certain way?

Who says dads can’t be tender?

Who says?  Who says?  Who says?

We all carry societal programming.  That's normal

But when we choose to release it

we find

Anything can happen, anything can be
