Parents, what is your heart longing for?

When I coach parents, I frequently ask, “What are you feeling and needing in this situation? What is your heart longing for?”

Owning our desires is step one to creating a wonderful life. But I didn’t always realize this as a new parent and physician.

Before I trained as a parent coach, I believed I didn’t have needs. Other people needed things FROM me. But I didn’t believe I actually had needs of my own.

I thought I could be the perfect mother/worker/spouse by needing nothing. I thought this meant I was strong. What I didn’t realize was, by not needing anything, I had literally given ALL MY POWER AWAY.

Your heart’s longings are your internal compass to your soul, a reflection of your values, heart, and precious voice. Seeking to meet your needs and desires makes you strong, authentic, and powerful, not weak.

What is your heart longing for? Step one is asking yourself, and step two is listening carefully to the answer.
